Road curves on mountains are limited in width and a 180-degree bend is commonly seen. Large vehicles, due to longer wheelbase, may cross into oncoming lanes while making turns. This can cause difficulties in passing other vehicles and increase the risk of congestion and accidents. The New Taipei City Government installed an intelligent signaling system at four curves on the Huan Shan Road in Wulai District with radar detectors and AI image recognition that can analyze vehicle trajectories based on captured images, thereby improving the accuracy of detecting large vehicles.
When an accident occurs, the system will send reports promptly to relevant authorities. If a large vehicle is detected not exiting a bend properly, the traffic control center will be notified immediately to dispatch swift response units.
This smart signal system for mountain curves was given the "2021 Smart City Innovation Application Award" in recognition of its contribution in smart traffic control. It has potentials to be used in intersections with poor visibility on either main or secondary roads to enhance overall safety.
