Preface
A Livable City of Happiness
2
Spanning over 2,215 km , Taichung City is a combination of natural wonders and urban sophistication.
Neighboring Miaoli County, Hsinchu County, Changhua County, and Nantou County, with the majestic
Central Mountain Range and Xueshan Range as its backdrop, Taichung is woven with landscapes
waiting to be explored. Taichung's central location also makes it a hub of connectivity, linking northern
and southern Taiwan. With Taichung Port and Taichung International Airport serving as gateways to
the world, this city truly stands at the heart of Taiwan.
Agreeable climate and strategic location allowed Taichung to thrive as the trading and transshipment
base for central Taiwan's agricultural products early on. This success spurred the development
of agricultural processing and prompted local businesses to introduce machinery and engage in
component manufacturing. Between the 1950s and 1960s, as Taiwan began to develop export-
oriented industries, processing and export zones were also established in Taichung, driving the
precision machinery industry and injecting growth momentum into commercial development.
The merging of Taichung County and City in 2010 marked a new chapter, fueling growth in population,
industry, and infrastructure. Today, Taichung shines as a beacon of modernity and opportunity, with a
thriving economy and a commitment to sustainable development.
Due to these advantages, Taichung's population continues to grow, attracting residents from other
counties and cities. In 2017, Taichung City became Taiwan's second most populous city, with a
population exceeding 2.85 million in 2024. Taichung City has also been repeatedly recognized in media
surveys and online polls as one of Taiwan's most livable cities preferred by the younger generation.
Discover in the following pages the city's beauty, warmth, and prospect.
