Smart transportation is a crucial infrastructure in smart cities. As veins of a city, public transportation must cater the needs of passenger load as well as carbon reduction. Smart transportation therefore becomes a leading trend. New Taipei City is creating the Dianhai Autonomous Electric Bus, connecting the surrounding areas of the Dianhai Light Rail. By leveraging new technologies, the smart bus addresses the challenges of labor shortages and rising costs of obtaining rail property, establishing a convenient transportation network for the emerging Tanhai New Town.
Unlike typical self-driving vehicles that usually detect, compute, and make decisions independently, the Danhai Autonomous Electric Bus system allows individual buses to communicate with each other and exchange operational status so that fleet formation and allocation are easily managed. Speed of vehicles and the distance between them are well-maintained. For example, when entering and leaving stations or approaching a red light, multiple buses will slow down simultaneously for better safety. Features under development also include increasing sensitivity and refining decision-making logic to cope with wider variety of road conditions and unexpected incidents.
